Veniamin Briskin studied at the Kharkov Institute of Fine Arts from 1921 to 1925.  During his training, Briskin specialized in book illustration and poster design. Moving to Moscow in 1932, he worked for the satirical journal Krokodil  [Crocodile] until 1933. The 7th Typography Workshop was a contract printer for the UVI (Department of Military Publishing) and UVMI (Department of Naval Publications). The printer typically handled the literature output of Voenizdat (Military Publishers) of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR.

Voenmorizdat was the State Naval Publishing House of the NKMF (People's Commissariat of the Navy) of the USSR. It was organized in 1938 under the direction of the People's Commissariat of the Navy. The publisher's chief objective was the dissemination of instruction manuals, informational literature, naval-themed books and political ephemera for and about the Soviet Navy. Infrequently, Voenmorizdat issued posters and graphic art materials with naval themes.
