Чудов, Юрий Николаевич

Born 1924, location unknown, presumably USSR; died, location unknown, presumably Russia

Iurii Nikolaevich Chudov was a Soviet graphic artist and a cartoonist who worked chiefly in Moscow for the bulk of his career. In 1950, Chudov graduated from the Moscow Higher Art and Industrial School. While a student at the school, he designed the label for “777”, a popular port wine in the Soviet Union.

Chudov was principally known as a graphic artist, however his most recognized poster design is arguably, “And we will be pilots!” (1951). The work depicts a sentimental image of two Soviet boys playing with a hand-made airplane while contemplating a career as pilots.
For a portion of his life, Chudov worked as a designer for the publishing house Iskusstvo (Art). He also created posters for the USSR Ministry of Defense that centered on the themes of army education and defense instruction.

Some of Chudov’s poster titles include: “Preserve the holy honor and military glory of Soviet artillery!” (1952); “Warrior, be vigilant! Vigilance is, first, a high and constant combat readiness!” (1955, with artists Dutov and Kruchina); “Glory to the conquerors of virgin lands! Soviet people are a heroic people!” (1957); and "We remain at our post!" (1961).
