Arakelov, Vartan Neresovich
Born November 18, 1910, Kuba (Quba, Azerbaijan), Imperial Russia; died 1985, location unknown, preseumably USSR
Vartan Nersesovich Arakelov was a Soviet graphic artist, painter and a muralist. Arakelov was a student at the Moscow Institute of Visual Art (MII) from 1933 to 1937. While the artist delved into poster design, it was not a mainstay of his career. Professionally, he was chiefly known for his mosaic panels of Soviet-era leaders such as Josef Stalin, but he also designed mosaic portraits of scientists and astronauts for the decoration of buildings throughout the USSR. Arakelov took part in the decoration of Kiev station in the Moscow metro. Vartan Nersesovich Arakelov was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and he was bestowed the titles of Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and People's Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Soviet-era published sources alternatively cite the artist’s given name as Vladimir.
