Kovan'ko, Sergei Matveevich
Born 1908 (location unknown, presumably in Imperial Russia); died 1949 (location unknown, presumably in the USSR)
Sergei Matveevich Kovan'ko lived in Kharkov and he worked in applied and industrial graphics for most of his career. He studied at the Architecture School of the Kharkov Art Institute in Ukraine. In the late 1920s and into the early 1930s, he illustrated Vsesvit (Universe) magazine in Kharkov and illustrated and designed books for the Young Guard publishing house, the Art publishing house and several other publications. Later in his life, he moved to Moscow where he worked in industrial graphic design. Kovan'ko was also engaged in easel and exhibition design and, he developed trademarks, illustrated books for Ogiz publishing house. Kovan'ko additionally designed the Soviet salon for the 1935 International Aviation Exhibition in Milan, Italy. In 1949, a retrospective exhibition of the artist's work was held in Moscow.
